In 2021, after six years of growth, there was decline in the Thai man-made filament fabric market, when its value decreased by -3.6% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. In 2021, overseas shipments of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep slump. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, man-made filament fabric exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 6.2% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Vietnam (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) were the main destinations of man-made filament fabric exports from Thailand, together accounting for 47% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +32.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers exports from Thailand, comprising 21% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Bhutan, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Vietnam stood at +1.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (-2.6% per year) and Bhutan (+35.1% per year).

Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bhutan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, man-made filament fabric imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) was the main supplier of man-made filament fabric to Thailand, accounting for a 152% share of total imports. Moreover, man-made filament fabric imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), sevenfold. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +4.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+5.7% per year) and Indonesia (-6.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of woven fabrics of man-made filaments and staple fibers to Thailand, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+4.9% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-5.0% per year).

In 2021, the average man-made filament fabric import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 70% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
