In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 192%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for sulphite wood pulp exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, sulphite wood pulp exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Romania (X tons), with a 4% share.

In 2021, overseas purchases of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 155% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) was the main supplier of sulphite wood pulp to the Netherlands, with a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium (X tons), with a 2.9% share of total imports. Portugal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with less than 0.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany totaled +5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-4.7% per year) and Portugal (-62.8% per year).
