In value terms, canned food exports declined slightly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 24%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of canned food exports from the Netherlands, together comprising 48% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, China, the United States, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Hong Kong SAR and Greece, which together accounted for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +26.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned food exports from the Netherlands, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value to China amounted to +30.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+0.8% per year) and Belgium (+8.3% per year).

In 2020, the average canned food export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.7% against the previous year. Over the last eight-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2020 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 6.5% against the previous year. In value terms, canned food imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned food imports to the Netherlands, together comprising 47% of total imports. Turkey, Poland, Thailand, China, Spain, Ireland, France, the UK, Indonesia and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2020, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the largest canned food suppliers to the Netherlands, with a combined 50% share of total imports. The average canned food import price stood at $X per ton in 2020, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the last eight years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2020.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
