Italy (X square meters) was the main destination for silk fabric exports from the Netherlands, with a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, silk fabric exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belgium (X square meters), with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy stood at +71.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+18.2% per year) and Belgium (+11.5% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste exports from the Netherlands, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 6.6% share.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste increased by 58% to X square meters, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +84.6% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X square meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, silk fabric imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +101.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of silk fabric to the Netherlands, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, silk fabric imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X square meters), with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +11.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-8.3% per year) and India (-3.7% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X), China ($X) and India ($X) were the largest silk fabric suppliers to the Netherlands, together accounting for 59% of total imports. These countries were followed by Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Romania, Poland and Bangladesh, which together accounted for a further 27%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +195.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average silk fabric import price amounted to $X per square meter, falling by -18.5% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, silk fabric import price decreased by -21.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per square meter), while the price for Bangladesh ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
