Smart Card Market Size in Tunisia

The Tunisian smart card market dropped markedly to $X in 2022, declining by -19.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In 2022, smart card exports from Tunisia surged to X units, picking up by 28% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 1,161%. The exports peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, smart card exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 768%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

North Macedonia (X units) was the main destination for smart card exports from Tunisia, with a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, smart card exports to North Macedonia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X units), twofold. Hungary (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to North Macedonia totaled +78.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+40.0% per year) and Hungary (+43.0% per year).

In value terms, Mexico ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for smart card exported from Tunisia worldwide, with a combined 32% share of total exports. Italy, North Macedonia, Hungary and Mauritania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

North Macedonia, with a CAGR of +75.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average smart card export price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -13.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 54%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Mauritania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit (smart card), when their volume decreased by -13.9% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 143% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, smart card imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 157% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of smart card to Tunisia, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, smart card imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X units), threefold. Spain (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +37.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+1.8% per year) and Spain (+48.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit (smart card) to Tunisia, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +41.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+9.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+73.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average smart card import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 56%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+16.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
