Cherry Market Size in Tunisia

The Tunisian cherry market declined to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cherry Production in Tunisia

In value terms, cherry production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 66%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of cherries in Tunisia fell to X tons per ha in 2022, flattening at the year before. In general, the yield recorded a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average cherry yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the cherry harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Tunisia

In 2022, shipments abroad of cherries increased by 189% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cherry exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 271%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Libya (X tons) was the main destination for cherry exports from Tunisia, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with a 2.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Libya stood at +23.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+8.0% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-46.9% per year).

In value terms, Libya ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cherries exports from Tunisia, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Libya amounted to +22.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+13.1% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-42.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+48.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cherry Imports

In 2015, after two years of decline, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of cherries, when their volume decreased by -70.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, cherry imports fell markedly to $X in 2015. Overall, imports, however, recorded significant growth. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In 2015, Italy (X tons) was the main supplier of cherry to Tunisia, with a approx. 100% share of total imports.
