In 2022, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from Tunisia skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 78% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 1,038% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 889% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Benin (X tons) was the main destination for exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from Tunisia, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to Benin exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), fourfold. Congo (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Benin amounted to +39.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+19.3% per year) and Congo (+5.2% per year).

In value terms, Congo ($X) remains the key foreign market for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres exports from Tunisia, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 30% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Congo totaled +23.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Benin (+14.7% per year) and Ghana (-3.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 168%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+81.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres into Tunisia stood at X tons, surging by 14% on the year before. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 262% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw resilient growth.
