Algeria (X units) was the main destination for contact lense exports from Tunisia, accounting for a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, contact lense exports to Algeria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Libya (X units), sixfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Algeria amounted to -1.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Libya (+16.9% per year) and Italy (-43.6% per year).
In value terms, Libya ($X), Algeria ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest markets for contact lense exported from Tunisia worldwide, with a combined 96% share of total exports.
Libya, with a CAGR of +29.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
The average contact lense export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 68% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Libya (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tunisia
Contact lense imports into Tunisia dropped sharply to X units in 2022, which is down by -25.7% compared with 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, contact lense imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 70%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Singapore (X units), South Korea (X units) and the UK (X units) were the main suppliers of contact lense imports to Tunisia, together accounting for 71% of total imports. Italy, the United States, Taiwan (Chinese), Ireland and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X), the UK ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest contact lense suppliers to Tunisia, together comprising 64% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +21.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average contact lense import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
