Garlic Market Size in Tunisia

The Tunisian garlic market fell sharply to $X in 2022, waning by -23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +35.6% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Garlic Production in Tunisia

In value terms, garlic production contracted significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +54.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In 2022, the average yield of garlic in Tunisia was estimated at X tons per ha, approximately reflecting 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 19% against the previous year. The garlic yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The garlic harvested area in Tunisia reduced modestly to X ha in 2022, approximately mirroring the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 6.2%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to garlic production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Tunisia

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of garlic, when their volume increased by 555% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, faced a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 574% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 463%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Libya (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Germany (X kg) were the main destinations of garlic exports from Tunisia, together accounting for 92% of total exports. Italy, Canada and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.5%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of -5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for garlic exported from Tunisia were Libya ($X), Algeria ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 73% share of total exports. Canada, France and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Canada, with a CAGR of +5.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average garlic export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -40.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+26.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Garlic Imports

Imports into Tunisia

In 2022, approx. X tons of garlic were imported into Tunisia; with a decrease of -42.2% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 543% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 432% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest garlic supplier to Tunisia, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, garlic imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +1.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+10.1% per year) and Egypt (+6.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Tunisia, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 21% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +8.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+18.7% per year) and Egypt (+26.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average garlic import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
