Libya (X tons) was the main destination for lactose exports from Tunisia, with a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, lactose exports to Libya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Armenia (X kg), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Libya stood at -2.5%.

In value terms, Libya ($X) remains the key foreign market for lactose and lactose syrup exports from Tunisia, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Armenia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Libya totaled -17.6%.

In 2022, the average lactose export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -19.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Libya amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Libya (-15.5%).

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of lactose and lactose syrup increased by 128% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient increase. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lactose imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of lactose imports to Tunisia, together comprising 85% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +26.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Egypt ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest lactose suppliers to Tunisia, together accounting for 70% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Egypt, with a CAGR of +40.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
