In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of lentils, when their volume increased by 9.1% to X tons. Overall, exports recorded slight growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 363%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lentil exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 129% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Senegal (X tons) was the main destination for lentil exports from Tunisia, accounting for a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, lentil exports to Senegal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sudan (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Senegal totaled +19.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (-11.7% per year) and Libya (-1.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for lentil exported from Tunisia were Senegal ($X), Sudan ($X) and Libya ($X), together comprising 100% of total exports.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +20.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average lentil export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Senegal (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Lentil Imports
Imports into Tunisia
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of lentils decreased by -8.9% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 161%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, lentil imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 152% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Canada (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of lentil imports to Tunisia, with a combined 87% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +55.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lentil suppliers to Tunisia were Canada ($X), Egypt ($X) and Turkey ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports.

In general, import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lentil import price decreased by -6.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 49%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
