The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 36%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main destinations of lettuce and chicory exports from Tunisia, together accounting for 56% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +15.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for lettuce and chicory exported from Tunisia were the Netherlands ($X), Russia ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 49% share of total exports. Hungary, Germany, Ukraine, Switzerland and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +13.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average lettuce and chicory export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Lettuce And Chicory Imports

Imports into Tunisia

Lettuce and chicory imports into Tunisia fell rapidly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -18.1% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 573% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 685%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) was the main lettuce and chicory supplier to Tunisia, with a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy (X kg), with a 2.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Egypt amounted to +4.9%.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lettuce and chicory to Tunisia, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 2.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Egypt amounted to +1.5%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory import price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lettuce and chicory import price increased by +39.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt totaled $X per ton.
