Melon Market Size in Tunisia

The Tunisian melon market reached $X in 2022, rising by 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Melon Production in Tunisia

In value terms, melon production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 31%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of melons in Tunisia contracted to X tons per ha, leveling off at 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 0.4%. The melon yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to melon production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Tunisia

In 2022, shipments abroad of melons increased by 717% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, melon exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Libya (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of melon exports from Tunisia, together accounting for 92% of total exports. The Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 4.1%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +17.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Libya ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for melon exported from Tunisia worldwide, with a combined 90% share of total exports. The Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 3.5%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +10.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average melon export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -29.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Libya (-2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Melon Imports

Imports into Tunisia

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of melons increased by 129% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed noticeable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 551% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 219% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Libya (X tons) was the main melon supplier to Tunisia, with a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, melon imports from Libya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Libya stood at +17.6%.

In value terms, Libya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of melons to Tunisia, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 10% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Libya amounted to +20.2%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average melon import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -34.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 78%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for Libya amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+262.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
