Over the period under review, exports posted notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 395%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, virgin olive oil exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 347% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of virgin olive oil exports from Tunisia, together accounting for 79% of total exports. Canada, France and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.6%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Canada (with a CAGR of +24.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Italy ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for virgin olive oil exported from Tunisia worldwide, with a combined 76% share of total exports. Canada, France and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

Among the main countries of destination, Canada, with a CAGR of +30.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average virgin olive oil export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tunisia

Virgin olive oil imports into Tunisia reduced rapidly to X tons in 2022, declining by -73.5% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 266%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, virgin olive oil imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 321%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of virgin olive oil imports to Tunisia.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +38.0%).

In value terms, Italy ($X) and Syrian Arab Republic ($X) constituted the largest virgin olive oil suppliers to Tunisia.
