Paint And Varnish Market Size in Tunisia

The Tunisian paint and varnish market fell to $X in 2022, which is down by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -12.1% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paint and varnish production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -11.3% against 2019 indices. Exports from Tunisia

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of paints and varnishes increased by 259% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paint and varnish exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Libya (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) were the main destinations of paint and varnish exports from Tunisia, with a combined 63% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Gabon, France, Iraq, Cote d'Ivoire, Congo, Morocco, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Algeria and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +102.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Libya ($X) remains the key foreign market for paints and varnishes exports from Tunisia, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritania, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Libya amounted to -5.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (+65.7% per year) and Mauritania (+12.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average paint and varnish export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -7.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Algeria (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tunisia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of paints and varnishes decreased by -12.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 85%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paint and varnish imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -28.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of paint and varnish imports to Tunisia, with a combined 58% share of total imports. Turkey, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +50.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest paint and varnish suppliers to Tunisia were Italy ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. The UK, Turkey, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Among the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +50.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average paint and varnish import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 40%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
