Sorghum Market Size in Tunisia
In 2022, the Tunisian sorghum market increased by 3.1% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. Sorghum consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Sorghum Production in Tunisia

Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In 2022, the average yield of sorghum in Tunisia stood at X kg per ha, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 1.2%. Over the period under review, the average sorghum yield hit record highs at X kg per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. After two years of growth, overseas shipments of sorghum decreased by -14.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 182% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, sorghum exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 191% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tons) was the main destination for sorghum exports from Tunisia, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X kg), sevenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Canada amounted to +81.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-5.4% per year) and Italy (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for sorghum exports from Tunisia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Canada stood at +70.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-3.9% per year) and Italy (0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average sorghum export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -10.3% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sorghum export price increased by +19.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 73%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+16.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Sorghum Imports
Imports into Tunisia
In 2022, the amount of sorghum imported into Tunisia fell significantly to X tons, with a decrease of -32.6% on the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -36.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 163% against the previous year. Imports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X tons) was the main supplier of sorghum to Tunisia, accounting for a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by India (X tons), with a 0.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to +53.1%.
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sorghum to Tunisia, comprising 100% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 0.3% share of total imports.
