Unmanufactured Tobacco Market Size in Tunisia

The Tunisian unmanufactured tobacco market dropped to $X in 2022, which is down by -13.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Tunisia was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, leveling off at the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 105%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the average unmanufactured tobacco yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the unmanufactured tobacco harvested area in Tunisia contracted slightly to X ha, waning by -1.7% compared with the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 159%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the unmanufactured tobacco harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Tunisia

Unmanufactured tobacco exports from Tunisia rose modestly to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 2.7% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -2.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports rose to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 122%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and the Netherlands (X kg) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Tunisia, with a combined 99.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +9.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the key foreign market for tobacco (unmanufactured) exports from Tunisia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Switzerland ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Belgium stood at +8.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (+4.5% per year) and the Netherlands (-24.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average unmanufactured tobacco export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+20.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Imports

Imports into Tunisia

In 2022, approx. X tons of tobacco (unmanufactured) were imported into Tunisia; reducing by -9.2% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Philippines (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) were the main suppliers of unmanufactured tobacco imports to Tunisia, with a combined 46% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +28.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to Tunisia were the Philippines ($X), Greece ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 40% share of total imports. Zimbabwe, Brazil, Malawi, Italy, Indonesia, Zambia, Switzerland, Mozambique, India and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +21.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 20%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+19.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
