Abrasives Market Size in Turkey

The Turkish abrasives market contracted to $X in 2021, declining by -8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a resilient expansion. Abrasives consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, abrasives production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In 2021, approx. X tons of abrasives (natural) were exported from Turkey; surging by 18% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, abrasives exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Bangladesh (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of abrasives exports from Turkey, with a combined 61% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Croatia, Israel, Iraq, Cyprus, Georgia, Vietnam, Tunisia and France, which together accounted for a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +53.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for abrasives (natural) exports from Turkey, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Bangladesh amounted to +38.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+39.2% per year) and China (+16.0% per year).

The average abrasives export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 48% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, overseas purchases of abrasives (natural) decreased by -36.1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 228%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, abrasives imports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 124%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Greece (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of abrasives to Turkey, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, abrasives imports from Greece exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fourfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Greece stood at +83.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+98.2% per year) and China (-3.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest abrasives suppliers to Turkey were China ($X), South Africa ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 58% of total imports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +208.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average abrasives import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -12.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 58%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
