Antibiotic Market Size in Turkey

In 2021, the Turkish antibiotic market decreased by -23.9% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. Antibiotic consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the third year in a row, Turkey recorded growth in shipments abroad of antibiotics, which increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 115%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, antibiotic exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 172% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Afghanistan (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) were the main destinations of antibiotic exports from Turkey, with a combined 37% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Syrian Arab Republic, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Switzerland and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +170.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for antibiotic exported from Turkey were Japan ($X), Afghanistan ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 39% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, Syrian Arab Republic, the Netherlands, Iraq, Switzerland and Italy, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Among the main countries of destination, Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +200.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average antibiotic export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 66% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+15.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, antibiotic imports into Turkey contracted significantly to X tons, shrinking by -21.9% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, antibiotic imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest antibiotic supplier to Turkey, with a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, antibiotic imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), twofold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-0.4% per year) and India (-9.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of antibiotics to Turkey, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +2.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-9.2% per year) and Spain (-1.9% per year).

The average antibiotic import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
