In 2021, the Turkish bituminous mixtures market was finally on the rise to reach $X after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. Exports from Turkey

In 2021, shipments abroad of bituminous mixtures decreased by -33.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 64%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Israel (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) were the main destinations of bituminous mixtures exports from Turkey, with a combined 34% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Ghana, Iraq, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Georgia, Libya, Turkmenistan, Romania and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +549.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for bituminous mixtures exported from Turkey were Iraq ($X), Israel ($X) and Ghana ($X), together accounting for 38% of total exports. Cyprus, Uzbekistan, Germany, Singapore, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Vietnam, Libya, Nigeria and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Among the main countries of destination, Singapore, with a CAGR of +954.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average bituminous mixtures export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 47%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+62.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, the amount of bituminous mixtures imported into Turkey shrank slightly to X tons, declining by -3% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 123%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 59%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Iraq (X tons) constituted the largest bituminous mixtures supplier to Turkey, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, bituminous mixtures imports from Iraq exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iran (X tons), threefold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Iraq stood at -11.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+3.5% per year) and the United States (-1.6% per year).

In value terms, Iraq ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bituminous mixtures to Turkey, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Iraq stood at -9.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-0.2% per year) and the United States (+2.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average bituminous mixtures import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 57%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
