In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Turkish market for bottles, jars and other containers of glass, when its value decreased by -31.4% to $X. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 133%. The exports peaked at X units in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container exports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 90%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Italy (X units) was the main destination for glass bottle, jar and container exports from Turkey, with a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, glass bottle, jar and container exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iraq (X units), threefold. The UK (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy amounted to +28.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (+82.1% per year) and the UK (+61.3% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for bottles, jars and other containers of glass exports from Turkey, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Iraq, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy amounted to +23.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+52.2% per year) and Iraq (+74.4% per year).

In 2021, the average export price for bottles, jars and other containers of glass amounted to $X per unit, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. Imports into Turkey

In 2021, purchases abroad of bottles, jars and other containers of glass decreased by -5.4% to X units, falling for the seventh year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 229%. Imports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container imports stood at $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

China (X units), France (X units) and Italy (X units) were the main suppliers of glass bottle, jar and container imports to Turkey, with a combined 35% share of total imports. Germany, India, Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, Moldova, Egypt, Iran, Hungary and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 53%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +44.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 19%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
