Carob Market Size in Turkey
After four years of growth, the Turkish carob market decreased by -3.7% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.
Carob Production in Turkey
In value terms, carob production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 30%. Carob production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
In 2021, the average yield of carob in Turkey shrank to X tons per ha, remaining constant against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 9.5% against the previous year. The carob yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of carob production in Turkey shrank slightly to X ha, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to carob production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports from Turkey
In 2021, the amount of carob exported from Turkey fell remarkably to X tons, reducing by -22.9% against 2020 figures. In general, exports showed a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 120%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carob exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -26.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 64%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) were the main destinations of carob exports from Turkey, with a combined 77% share of total exports. Germany, South Korea, Morocco, Azerbaijan, Qatar, Jordan and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +1,013.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for carob exported from Turkey were Saudi Arabia ($X), Algeria ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 67% of total exports. Israel, Azerbaijan, Qatar, Morocco, South Korea, Egypt and Jordan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Morocco, with a CAGR of +717.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average carob export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, carob export price increased by +79.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Algeria (+16.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Carob Imports
Imports into Turkey
After two years of growth, overseas purchases of carob decreased by -18% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 1,474%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, carob imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 1,741%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Cyprus (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of carob imports to Turkey, together accounting for 80% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +38.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cyprus ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carob to Turkey, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Cyprus amounted to +20.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (+34.6% per year) and Lebanon (+51.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average carob import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 38% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the price for Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
