In 2021, the Turkish cashew nut market increased by 79% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. Cashew nut consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of cashew nuts decreased by -45.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 47%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Estonia (X tons) was the main destination for cashew nut exports from Turkey, accounting for a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, cashew nut exports to Estonia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X kg), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Syrian Arab Republic (X kg), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Estonia totaled +13.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-12.7% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (0.0% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X), Estonia ($X) and Syrian Arab Republic ($X) were the largest markets for cashew nut exported from Turkey worldwide, together comprising 70% of total exports. These countries were followed by Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Poland and Tanzania, which together accounted for a further 10%.

Among the main countries of destination, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +25.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cashew nut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 43%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+15.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of cashew nuts, when their volume increased by 1,070% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 1,278% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Guinea (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) were the main suppliers of cashew nut imports to Turkey, with a combined 86% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Guinea (with a CAGR of +18.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Benin ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the largest cashew nut suppliers to Turkey, together accounting for 77% of total imports.

Benin, with a CAGR of +17.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average cashew nut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -17.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 34%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
