Exports from Turkey
In 2021, approx. X tons of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) were exported from Turkey; declining by -11.4% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 480%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 666%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Iran (X tons) was the main destination for sulphite wood pulp exports from Turkey, accounting for a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, sulphite wood pulp exports to Iran exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cyprus (X tons), sevenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Iran amounted to +48.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cyprus (+58.9% per year) and Algeria (+34.3% per year).
In value terms, Iran ($X) remains the key foreign market for chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) exports from Turkey, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cyprus ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Iran totaled +35.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cyprus (+50.5% per year) and Algeria (+38.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sulphite wood pulp export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sulphite wood pulp export price increased by +90.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 77% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Algeria (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Sulphite Wood Pulp Imports
Imports into Turkey
For the fifth year in a row, Turkey recorded growth in purchases abroad of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades), which increased by 38% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 624%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 349% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Portugal (X tons) constituted the largest sulphite wood pulp supplier to Turkey, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, sulphite wood pulp imports from Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Portugal stood at +26.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+4.4% per year) and Germany (-2.1% per year).
In value terms, Portugal ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) to Turkey, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Portugal stood at +26.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+8.2% per year) and Germany (+1.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average sulphite wood pulp import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 53% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
