The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 24%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of chilies and peppers (green) in Turkey shrank to X tons per ha, waning by -5.9% on the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then fell in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports from Turkey

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of chilies and peppers (green) decreased by -16.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main destinations of chili and pepper exports from Turkey, together comprising 47% of total exports. Bulgaria, Ukraine, Austria, the Netherlands, the UK, Belarus, Serbia, Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +68.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Romania ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for chili and pepper exported from Turkey worldwide, together accounting for 54% of total exports. Austria, the Netherlands, the UK, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Belarus, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Belarus, with a CAGR of +65.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average chili and pepper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of chilies and peppers (green), when their volume decreased by -11.8% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 25,298% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 7,807%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Romania (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of chili and pepper imports to Turkey, together comprising 64% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +313.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Romania ($X), Germany ($X) and Russia ($X) were the largest chili and pepper suppliers to Turkey, with a combined 69% share of total imports.

Germany, with a CAGR of +388.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average chili and pepper import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 153%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
