In value terms, cotton lint exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 108% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Pakistan (X tons) was the main destination for cotton lint exports from Turkey, with a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, cotton lint exports to Pakistan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bangladesh (X tons), threefold. Iran (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Pakistan totaled +197.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+30.4% per year) and Iran (+73.1% per year).

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the key foreign market for cotton lint exports from Turkey, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Pakistan totaled +197.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+33.8% per year) and Iran (+76.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cotton lint export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cotton lint export price increased by +53.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Indonesia ($X per ton) and Bangladesh ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) and Pakistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of cotton lint, when their volume decreased by -3.6% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +38.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, cotton lint imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 46%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The United States (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of cotton lint imports to Turkey, together accounting for 66% of total imports. Australia, Azerbaijan, Sudan, Mexico, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +125.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cotton lint suppliers to Turkey were the United States ($X), Brazil ($X) and Greece ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports. Australia, Azerbaijan, Sudan, Mexico, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Mexico, with a CAGR of +159.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cotton lint import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 38% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cotton lint import price increased by +79.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Australia ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Turkmenistan ($X per ton) and Azerbaijan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
