After two years of decline, the Turkish expanded clays market increased by 17% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a mild decrease. For the third year in a row, Turkey recorded growth in shipments abroad of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag, which increased by 46% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 155% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, expanded clays exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted strong growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Russia (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) were the main destinations of expanded clays exports from Turkey, with a combined 45% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Italy, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Algeria, Georgia, Iraq, Thailand and Albania, which together accounted for a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +2,782.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for expanded clays exported from Turkey were Israel ($X), Russia ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 42% of total exports. Azerbaijan, Algeria, Bulgaria, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Albania, Tunisia, Thailand, Iraq and Georgia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

Among the main countries of destination, Thailand, with a CAGR of +4,034.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average expanded clays export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+43.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, purchases abroad of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag increased by 86% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted a tangible increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, expanded clays imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 93%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

South Korea (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of expanded clays imports to Turkey, together comprising 57% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +290.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest expanded clays suppliers to Turkey were Germany ($X), South Korea ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 72% of total imports. China, Slovenia, Kazakhstan, France, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +286.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average expanded clays import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -16.2% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 102%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+34.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
