Flax Fiber Market Size in Turkey

For the fifth year in a row, the Turkish flax fiber market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 4.4% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption recorded a prominent expansion. Flax fiber consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Flax Fiber Production in Turkey

In value terms, flax fiber production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 43%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average flax fiber yield in Turkey totaled X tons per ha, approximately equating 2021. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the average flax fiber yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The flax fiber harvested area in Turkey was estimated at X ha in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021. In general, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The flax fiber harvested area peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports from Turkey

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of flax fiber, when their volume decreased by -16.7% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 652% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, flax fiber exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 373%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Serbia (X tons) was the main destination for flax fiber exports from Turkey, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, flax fiber exports to Serbia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Georgia (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Romania (X tons), with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Serbia totaled +39.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Georgia (+9.1% per year) and Romania (+5.7% per year).

In value terms, Serbia ($X) remains the key foreign market for flax fiber exports from Turkey, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Georgia ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Serbia amounted to +37.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Georgia (-0.8% per year) and Romania (+1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average flax fiber export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -18.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 24%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Turkey

For the fifth consecutive year, Turkey recorded growth in overseas purchases of flax fiber, which increased by 16% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, flax fiber imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest flax fiber supplier to Turkey, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, flax fiber imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lithuania (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium amounted to +10.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+16.5% per year) and France (+41.3% per year).

In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of flax fiber to Turkey, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lithuania ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Belgium totaled +13.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (+16.9% per year) and France (+43.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average flax fiber import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 15%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Belgium ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) and Lithuania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
