In value terms, garlic exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 630% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Iraq (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Georgia (X tons) were the main destinations of garlic exports from Turkey, together comprising 62% of total exports. Russia, Hungary, Romania, Lebanon, the United States, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkmenistan, Syrian Arab Republic and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +912.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iraq ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Russia ($X) constituted the largest markets for garlic exported from Turkey worldwide, together accounting for 57% of total exports. The United States, Hungary, Romania, Lebanon, Turkmenistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Syrian Arab Republic and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

The average garlic export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -37.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 96%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+24.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of garlic decreased by -94% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 2,129%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,192% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Egypt (X tons), China (X tons) and Iran (X tons) were the main suppliers of garlic imports to Turkey, together comprising 99.9% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +15.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
