Handbag Market Size in Turkey

The Turkish handbag market reached $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, consumption saw a pronounced expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 50%. Israel (X units), France (X units) and Iraq (X units) were the main destinations of handbag exports from Turkey, with a combined 24% share of total exports. Libya, the Netherlands, Germany, Greece, the UK, Bulgaria, Italy, the United States, Kazakhstan and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Libya (with a CAGR of +45.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X), Italy ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest markets for handbag exported from Turkey worldwide, together comprising 44% of total exports.

The United States, with a CAGR of +36.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average handbag export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -8.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 a decrease of -1.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Turkey

In 2022, overseas purchases of handbags increased by 51% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. Imports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, handbag imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +111.8% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest handbag supplier to Turkey, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, handbag imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X units), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Myanmar (X units), with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled -10.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+154.5% per year) and Myanmar (+125.0% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of handbags to Turkey, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy stood at +12.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-9.9% per year) and Malaysia (+144.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average handbag import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 6.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the price for Malaysia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
