Hazelnut Market Size in Turkey

The Turkish hazelnut market totaled $X in 2021, surging by 4.4% against the previous year. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, the average hazelnut yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of hazelnuts production in Turkey shrank slightly to X ha, approximately mirroring 2020. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of hazelnuts, when their volume increased by 439% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed measured growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hazelnut exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a moderate expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Iraq (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) were the main destinations of hazelnut exports from Turkey, together comprising 35% of total exports. Lebanon, Israel, Hong Kong SAR, Afghanistan, Syrian Arab Republic, Senegal, Norway, Spain, Sweden and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Senegal (with a CAGR of +94.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Iraq ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest markets for hazelnut exported from Turkey worldwide, with a combined 43% share of total exports. Senegal, Israel, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syrian Arab Republic, Sweden, Norway, Spain, Tunisia and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +109.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average hazelnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -11.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+24.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, approx. X tons of hazelnuts were imported into Turkey; with a decrease of -36.6% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 177%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut imports declined sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 174%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest hazelnut supplier to Turkey, with a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, hazelnut imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates stood at +62.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+171.5% per year) and Italy (-7.3% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hazelnut to Turkey, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +55.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+600.3% per year) and Lebanon (-3.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average hazelnut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -12.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 24%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
