The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Romania (X tons) was the main destination for maize exports from Turkey, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, maize exports to Romania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Bulgaria (X tons), with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Romania amounted to +3.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+107.9% per year) and Bulgaria (-4.2% per year).
In value terms, Romania ($X) remains the key foreign market for maize (green) exports from Turkey, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Romania stood at +10.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-3.9% per year) and the UK (-6.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average maize export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of maize (green), when their volume increased by 145% to X tons. In general, imports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1,411% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, maize imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 1,845% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Iran (X tons) constituted the largest maize supplier to Turkey, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sweden (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X kg), with a 2.3% share.
From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Iran totaled +39.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (0.0% per year) and Italy (-11.9% per year).
In value terms, Iran ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize (green) to Turkey, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 5.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.2% share.
From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Iran stood at +56.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (0.0% per year) and Italy (-14.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average maize import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 222% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
