Matches Market Size in Turkey

In 2021, the Turkish matches market decreased by -7.6% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Turkey

In 2021, exports of matches from Turkey surged to X tons, picking up by 37% on 2020. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, matches exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for matches exports from Turkey, accounting for a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, matches exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bulgaria (X tons), with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany amounted to -5.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (0.0% per year) and Bulgaria (-9.8% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for matches exports from Turkey, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Syrian Arab Republic, with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at -3.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (0.0% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (-3.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average matches export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, approx. X tons of matches were imported into Turkey; with a decrease of -38% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 90%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, matches imports declined significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 117%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Pakistan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of matches to Turkey, with a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, matches imports from Pakistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bulgaria (X tons), twofold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Pakistan was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+2.5% per year) and India (-18.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest matches suppliers to Turkey were Sweden ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Pakistan ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports.
