In 2021, the Turkish molluscs market increased by 0.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, molluscs exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 60%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Greece (X tons) was the main destination for molluscs exports from Turkey, accounting for a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, molluscs exports to Greece exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), sixfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Greece totaled +43.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-0.3% per year) and Spain (-6.4% per year).

In value terms, Greece ($X) remains the key foreign market for molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exports from Turkey, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Greece stood at +44.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+2.7% per year) and Spain (-3.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average molluscs export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Molluscs imports into Turkey surged to X tons in 2021, growing by 38% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, molluscs imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs to Turkey, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, molluscs imports from Malaysia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Chile (X tons), with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Malaysia amounted to +55.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-23.3% per year) and Chile (-12.5% per year).

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) to Turkey, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 3.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Malaysia stood at +64.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-21.9% per year) and Spain (-14.1% per year).

In 2021, the average molluscs import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 48% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, molluscs import price increased by +89.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
