Soft Drink Market Size in Turkey

The Turkish soft drink market contracted modestly to $X in 2021, waning by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a noticeable curtailment. Soft drink consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of soft drinks increased by 36% to X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Germany (X litres), the UK (X litres) and Israel (X litres) were the main destinations of soft drink exports from Turkey, with a combined 31% share of total exports. Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, the United States, Iran, the Netherlands, France, Libya, Bulgaria and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Lebanon (with a CAGR of +62.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for soft drink exported from Turkey were Germany ($X), Israel ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 30% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Iraq, the Netherlands, the United States, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Libya, Cyprus, France, Bulgaria and Lebanon, which together accounted for a further 38%.

Among the main countries of destination, Lebanon, with a CAGR of +53.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average soft drink export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, increasing by 7.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Lebanon ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

For the third consecutive year, Turkey recorded growth in purchases abroad of soft drinks, which increased by 44% to X litres in 2021. In general, imports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Austria (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of soft drink to Turkey, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, soft drink imports from Austria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Switzerland (X litres), threefold. The United Arab Emirates (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Austria stood at +19.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (+31.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+135.3% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of soft drink to Turkey, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Switzerland ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Austria totaled +16.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (+26.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+3.4% per year).

In 2021, the average soft drink import price amounted to $X per litre, increasing by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 31%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per litre), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
