After three years of growth, overseas shipments of non-cellular polystyrene films, sheets, foil and strip decreased by -6.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, non-cellular polystyrene film exports expanded to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 41%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Russia (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of non-cellular polystyrene film exports from Turkey, together comprising 45% of total exports. Austria, Romania, Italy, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Poland, France, Canada and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +115.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for non-cellular polystyrene film exported from Turkey were Germany ($X), Russia ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 45% of total exports. Austria, Romania, Lithuania, Italy, the Czech Republic, France, Poland, the United States and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +117.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average non-cellular polystyrene film export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 16%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey
In 2022, overseas purchases of non-cellular polystyrene films, sheets, foil and strip decreased by -1.7% to X tons, falling for the sixth consecutive year after five years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -23.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 53%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-cellular polystyrene film imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +6.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of non-cellular polystyrene film to Turkey, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, non-cellular polystyrene film imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), threefold. Greece (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +10.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+11.6% per year) and Greece (+32.1% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-cellular polystyrene films, sheets, foil and strip to Turkey, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +10.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+10.1% per year) and Italy (+10.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average non-cellular polystyrene film import price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 19%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
