Pistachio Market Size in Turkey

For the fifth year in a row, the Turkish pistachio market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 6.6% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. Pistachio consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Pistachio Production in Turkey

In value terms, pistachio production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 80% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of pistachios in Turkey surged to X kg per ha, increasing by 54% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 74% against the previous year. The pistachio yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The pistachio harvested area in Turkey dropped rapidly to X ha in 2022, which is down by -39.8% on 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 389% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports from Turkey

In 2022, approx. X tons of pistachios were exported from Turkey; increasing by 7.2% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 777% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, pistachio exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 390% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) were the main destinations of pistachio exports from Turkey, with a combined 44% share of total exports. Russia, Libya, Israel, Iran, Syrian Arab Republic, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Belgium and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +72.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Iraq ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for pistachio exported from Turkey worldwide, with a combined 48% share of total exports. Russia, Jordan, Israel, Libya, Iran, Egypt, Syrian Arab Republic, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates and Algeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +78.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average pistachio export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pistachio Imports

Imports into Turkey

In 2022, supplies from abroad of pistachios increased by 85% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 366,459%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pistachio imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 134,790%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pistachio to Turkey, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, pistachio imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iran (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at +60.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+98.0% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+13.3% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pistachios to Turkey, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iran ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States stood at +58.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+105.3% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+21.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average pistachio import price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
