Plastic Bag Market Size in Turkey

The Turkish plastic bag market contracted to $X in 2022, declining by -11.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, posted noticeable growth. Plastic bag consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Plastic Bag Production in Turkey

In value terms, plastic bag production contracted significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 84% against the previous year. Plastic bag production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Turkey

In 2022, exports of plastic sacks and bags from Turkey expanded rapidly to X tons, growing by 6.8% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plastic bag exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons) was the main destination for plastic bag exports from Turkey, accounting for a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic bag exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Israel (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK totaled +18.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (+14.9% per year) and Germany (+9.0% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and Israel ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for plastic bag exported from Turkey worldwide, with a combined 45% share of total exports. The United States, the Netherlands, France, Greece, Iraq, Spain, Belgium, Denmark and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +16.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2022, approx. X tons of plastic sacks and bags were imported into Turkey; increasing by 8.4% on 2021 figures. In general, imports showed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic bag imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

China (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic bag imports to Turkey, together comprising 51% of total imports. Belgium, Spain, Iran, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Thailand, Egypt and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iran (with a CAGR of +140.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), China ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest plastic bag suppliers to Turkey, with a combined 51% share of total imports. Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Poland, the UK, Thailand, Egypt, Iran and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Iran, with a CAGR of +126.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 39% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
