In 2022, shipments abroad of polypropylene in primary forms increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 212%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 406%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Ukraine (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Romania (X tons) were the main destinations of polypropylene in primary forms exports from Turkey, together comprising 34% of total exports. Egypt, Israel, Georgia, Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, Syrian Arab Republic, Iran, Libya, Spain and Cyprus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Iran (with a CAGR of +56.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of polypropylene in primary forms decreased by -6.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 13%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +38.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of polypropylene in primary forms to Turkey, accounting for a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, polypropylene in primary forms imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), threefold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Saudi Arabia stood at +4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+99.5% per year) and South Korea (+37.7% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of polypropylene in primary forms to Turkey, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Saudi Arabia amounted to +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+95.5% per year) and South Korea (+37.6% per year).

The average polypropylene in primary forms import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
