Potato Chips Market Size in Turkey

The Turkish potato chips market fell to $X in 2022, which is down by -8.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Potato chips consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato chips production contracted sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the fifth consecutive year, Turkey recorded growth in shipments abroad of potato chips, which increased by 3.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, potato chips exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Cyprus (X tons), Georgia (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) were the main destinations of potato chips exports from Turkey, together comprising 41% of total exports. Syrian Arab Republic, Lebanon, Qatar, Germany, Libya, Israel, Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lebanon (with a CAGR of +193.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cyprus ($X), Qatar ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) were the largest markets for potato chips exported from Turkey worldwide, with a combined 36% share of total exports. Syrian Arab Republic, Lebanon, Georgia, Libya, Russia, Israel, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 49%.

Lebanon, with a CAGR of +198.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average potato chips export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Turkey

In 2022, the amount of potato chips imported into Turkey skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 50% on 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 143%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Russia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato chips imports to Turkey, with a combined 66% share of total imports. Belgium, Lebanon, Egypt, India and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +21,114.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average potato chips import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
