Potato Market Size in Turkey
The Turkish potato market contracted slightly to $X in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. Potato Production in Turkey
In value terms, potato production expanded significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 145% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The average yield of potatoes in Turkey amounted to X tons per ha in 2021, approximately mirroring the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 6.1% against the previous year. The potato yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, approx. X ha of potatoes were harvested in Turkey; with a decrease of -2.4% on 2020. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 20%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the potato harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Potato Exports
Exports from Turkey
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of potatoes, when their volume increased by 109% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,141% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, potato exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 856% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Iraq (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Turkey, with a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Iraq amounted to +10.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+40.9% per year) and Azerbaijan (+22.4% per year).
In value terms, Iraq ($X) remains the key foreign market for potato exports from Turkey, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Iraq amounted to +20.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+32.7% per year) and Azerbaijan (+21.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average potato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 89% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Potato Imports
Imports into Turkey
In 2021, purchases abroad of potatoes decreased by -37.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 462%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, potato imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 267% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Turkey, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+5.4% per year) and Germany (-11.3% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Turkey, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands stood at +2.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+4.8% per year) and France (-6.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average potato import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+32.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
