Market Size for Primary Cells and Batteries in Turkey
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Turkish primary cell and battery market, when its value decreased by -1.8% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Primary cell and battery consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X units of primary cells and batteries were exported from Turkey; picking up by 43% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 59%. The exports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, primary cell and battery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 71%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Germany (X units), Russia (X units) and Syrian Arab Republic (X units) were the main destinations of primary cell and battery exports from Turkey, with a combined 46% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +100.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for primary cells and batteries exports from Turkey, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Cyprus, with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia totaled +45.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iran (+14.8% per year) and Cyprus (-3.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average primary cell and battery export price amounted to $X per unit, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, primary cell and battery export price decreased by -1.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+21.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries
Imports into Turkey
In 2022, overseas purchases of primary cells and batteries decreased by -5.5% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, primary cell and battery imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 13%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of primary cell and battery to Turkey, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, primary cell and battery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X units), with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-1.3% per year) and Germany (+18.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of primary cells and batteries to Turkey, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-6.1% per year) and Poland (-3.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average primary cell and battery import price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 5.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per unit), while the price for Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
