In 2021, the Turkish preserved salmon market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In 2021, the amount of salmon (prepared or preserved) exported from Turkey rose to X tons, increasing by 4.9% on the year before. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1,552% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved salmon exports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 2,370%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X kg), the United States (X kg) and the UK (X kg) were the main destinations of preserved salmon exports from Turkey, together comprising 30% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Marshall Islands, the Netherlands, Liberia, Spain, Malta, Japan, Canada and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 51%.
From 2015 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +198.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for preserved salmon exported from Turkey were Belgium ($X), the United States ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 36% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Marshall Islands, Liberia and Malta, which together accounted for a further 51%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +270.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average preserved salmon export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 50% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2015 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+23.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey
In 2021, approx. X tons of salmon (prepared or preserved) were imported into Turkey; waning by -28.7% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved salmon imports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 81%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest preserved salmon supplier to Turkey, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved salmon imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Norway (X kg), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X kg), with a 12% share.
From 2015 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from France totaled +25.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Norway (-17.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+76.9% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of salmon (prepared or preserved) to Turkey, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 6.8% share.
From 2015 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from France amounted to +25.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Norway (-19.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+101.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved salmon import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
