Overall, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 1,894%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved sardines exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,667%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

France (X tons) was the main destination for preserved sardines exports from Turkey, accounting for a 31% share of total exports. Moreover, preserved sardines exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Liberia (X tons), threefold. Marshall Islands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France totaled +46.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Liberia (+86.7% per year) and Marshall Islands (+84.3% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for sardines (prepared or preserved) exports from Turkey, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ukraine ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Liberia, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France amounted to +46.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+380,616.7% per year) and Liberia (+66.6% per year).

In 2022, the average preserved sardines export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 72%. In 2022, overseas purchases of sardines (prepared or preserved) decreased by -49.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 4,468%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved sardines imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 5,711%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

China (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of preserved sardines imports to Turkey, together comprising 89% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +102.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sardines (prepared or preserved) to Turkey, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.7% share.
