The Turkish market for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery dropped notably to $X in 2022, which is down by -34.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a slight decline. For the seventh year in a row, Turkey recorded growth in shipments abroad of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery, which increased by 10% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +92.2% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +90.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons) was the main destination for candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Turkey, with a 24% share of total exports. Moreover, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iraq (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the UK (X tons), with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States totaled +17.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (+3.3% per year) and the UK (+10.7% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Turkey, comprising 22% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iraq ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +16.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (+2.7% per year) and the UK (+10.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average export price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Israel (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Candies, Sweets, and Nonchocolate Confectionery
Imports into Turkey
In 2022, overseas purchases of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 45%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports to Turkey, with a combined 50% share of total imports. The UK, Germany, Brazil, Spain, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Switzerland, Iran and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +68.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery suppliers to Turkey, together comprising 48% of total imports. The UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +69.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 9.1%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
