Sunflower Seed Market Size in Turkey

The Turkish sunflower seed market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower seed exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) were the main destinations of sunflower seed exports from Turkey, with a combined 38% share of total exports. Algeria, Germany, Romania, Ukraine, Tunisia, Poland, the United States, Bulgaria, Austria and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +103.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sunflower seed exports from Turkey, comprising 22% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with an 8.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with an 8.2% share.

Imports into Turkey

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of sunflower seed increased by 14% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 60%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sunflower seed imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower seed to Turkey, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, sunflower seed imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Moldova (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Romania (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine totaled +12.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Moldova (+1.3% per year) and Romania (+2.0% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower seed to Turkey, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ukraine amounted to +14.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Moldova (+4.1% per year) and Romania (+4.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sunflower seed import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sunflower seed import price increased by +69.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 43%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
