The Turkish technical textiles market plummeted to $X in 2021, shrinking by -44.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded perceptible growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of textile products and articles for technical uses increased by 111% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports showed significant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for technical textiles exports from Turkey, accounting for a 20% share of total exports. Moreover, technical textiles exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy totaled +65.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+31.5% per year) and Germany (+13.9% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for technical textiles exported from Turkey were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Iran ($X), with a combined 29% share of total exports. The United States, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, the UK, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, the Czech Republic and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Among the main countries of destination, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +70.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average technical textiles export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, overseas purchases of textile products and articles for technical uses increased by 3.5% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, technical textiles imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +76.5% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest technical textiles supplier to Turkey, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, technical textiles imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +15.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+7.7% per year) and Italy (+6.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest technical textiles suppliers to Turkey, with a combined 64% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +16.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average technical textiles import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
