Exports by Country
The UK (X units), Kazakhstan (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main destinations of sportswear exports from Turkey, with a combined 29% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Libya, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Netherlands, Hungary, Albania, Ukraine and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +72.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest markets for sportswear exported from Turkey worldwide, together accounting for 43% of total exports. These countries were followed by Iraq, Kazakhstan, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 24%.
Hungary, with a CAGR of +81.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average sportswear export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sportswear export price increased by +9.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 35%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+14.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey
For the third consecutive year, Turkey recorded decline in overseas purchases of track suits, ski suits and swimwear, which decreased by -33.2% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sportswear imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest sportswear supplier to Turkey, accounting for a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, sportswear imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bulgaria (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Vietnam (X units), with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at -10.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+22.4% per year) and Vietnam (-2.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the largest sportswear suppliers to Turkey, with a combined 43% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Cambodia, the UK, Morocco, Tunisia, Georgia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Egypt, which together accounted for a further 28%.
Among the main suppliers, the UK, with a CAGR of +45.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average sportswear import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 50% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while the price for Bangladesh ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
