In 2021, the Turkish preserved tuna market decreased by -1.7% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after eight years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, posted a resilient increase. Preserved tuna exports from Turkey skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, increasing by 199% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 489%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved tuna exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 331% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) was the main destination for preserved tuna exports from Turkey, with a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, preserved tuna exports to Syrian Arab Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Albania (X tons), threefold. Greece (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Syrian Arab Republic totaled +12.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Albania (+19.8% per year) and Greece (+78.6% per year).
In value terms, Syrian Arab Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for tuna (prepared or preserved) exports from Turkey, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Greece ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Albania, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Syrian Arab Republic stood at +6.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Greece (+65.3% per year) and Albania (+17.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved tuna export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Ethiopia ($X per ton) and Serbia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Albania ($X per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Preserved Tuna Imports
Imports into Turkey
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of tuna (prepared or preserved), when their volume decreased by -5.8% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 1,287% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, preserved tuna imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 841%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) was the main preserved tuna supplier to Turkey, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved tuna imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +29.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+193.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+102.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tuna (prepared or preserved) to Turkey, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 5.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +27.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+210.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+90.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved tuna import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
