Vegetable Product Market Size in Turkey

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Turkish vegetable product market, when its value decreased by -43.3% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a resilient increase. Vegetable product consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Vegetable Product Production in Turkey

In value terms, vegetable product production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 39%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of vegetable products in Turkey declined significantly to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -20.2% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then declined dramatically in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the vegetable product harvested area in Turkey skyrocketed to X ha, picking up by 20% against the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to vegetable product production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Turkey

Vegetable product exports from Turkey amounted to X tons in 2022, increasing by 11% compared with the year before. In general, exports saw a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 56%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable product exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 74%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Egypt (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of vegetable product exports from Turkey, with a combined 39% share of total exports. Algeria, Syrian Arab Republic, Iraq, Bulgaria, Denmark, Israel, Saudi Arabia, China, the United States and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +47.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for vegetable product exported from Turkey were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 52% share of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +41.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average vegetable product export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -4.2% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, vegetable product export price increased by +33.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 31% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+12.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2022, overseas purchases of vegetable products decreased by -47.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw slight growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 208% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vegetable product imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 136%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Cyprus (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) were the main suppliers of vegetable product imports to Turkey, together accounting for 59% of total imports. Nigeria, China, Algeria, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Morocco, Bulgaria, Egypt, Italy and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +198.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, vegetable product import price increased by +28.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
